Stress Reduction Through Mindfulness is informed by the evidence-based work of Jon Kabat-Zinn and his Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program taught at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and hundreds of other locations around the country and world since 1979. In December, Anderson Cooper did a piece on mindfulness and MBSR and noted the profound effect this experience had on him.
There are only a handful of people in this area of the country who have been or are going through the certification program at the Center for Mindfulness at the UMass Medical School. Our guest speaker became a student of MBSR when she faced a serious health scare in her own life and has not stopped learning and practicing since. There are many health related issues that have been associated with stress, they include heart disease, asthma, obesity, diabetes, headaches, depression and anxiety, gastrointestinal problems, Alzheimer’s disease, accelerated aging, and premature death. As a society, we are just beginning to understand the impact of stress on our lives.
